What is PKD?
Polycystic kidney disease is an inherited condition associated with Persian cats. Fluid-filled cysts develop in the kidneys and can grow over time, damaging kidney tissue.
Screening and diagnosis
Genetic testing can identify a relevant inherited mutation; ultrasound helps evaluate kidney cysts. Ask the breeder for available parent screening documentation and discuss its meaning with your veterinarian.
Signs and care
Increased thirst or urination, weight loss, reduced appetite, vomiting, or lethargy need veterinary attention. Management depends on the individual cat and kidney function.
